An easy Easter treat that you can easily make gluten free- it doubles as dessert and table decorations!
We are having a simple Easter celebration over here, since we still have unpacking to do.
We know where the church is, so my main concern was what to cook that wouldn’t take a lot of my time. I decided on a simple brunch using help from the grocery store. We are having: a spiral ham, asparagus, egg & potato casserole, mini cinnamon buns. I can make the casserole the night before, the ham is ready, the cinnamon rolls use canned biscuits and will be simple so I think this will be doable.
I decided against making dessert since we will most likely be munching on Easter chocolate, plus I have no time for baking right now. I did manage to squeeze in this fun activity and you still have time to do it to!
Chocolate birds’ nests are one of our newer traditions. Some recipes call for lo-main noodles, but I love using pretzels instead. All you do is melt the chocolate, stir in the pretzel sticks, form the nests and stick on some Easter candy for decoration. Fun, decorative and delicious (who doesn’t love the salty-sweet combo of chocolate & pretzels?!). These will double as decorations and dessert for us this year!
Doesn’t get much easier than mixing pretzels with chocolate!
- Half pound pretzels sticks (use gluten free if needed)
- 8 ounce semi-sweet chocolate (I used baking bars and cut them in half)
- 4 ounce bittersweet chocolate, broken up into smaller pieces
- Easter candy- Bird Peeps, Chocolate or Malted eggs (I used Whopper eggs)
- Line a large cookie sheet or two with wax paper or parchment paper coated with cooking spray.
- Melt chocolate over low heat in double broiler, stirring frequently until smooth. Reserve a little chocolate for dipping candy to stick in nest (about ⅓ cup).
- Stir pretzels into chocolate, stirring well to combine. Using a large serving spoon, place a mound of pretzels on prepared cookie sheet, forming a small nest. Let cool for a few minutes before placing candy on the nests (can place in fridge to help speed along).
- Dip candy into reserved chocolate and carefully place on nest. Put cookie sheet in the refrigerator until nests are set. You can do this ahead and take them out a hour or two before your Easter meal.
They make a perfect table decoration and tasty treat! Enjoy!

Those nests are so cute, and you’re right, who wouldn’t love the chocolate-salty combo? I would love to hear about the egg potato casserole….
Thanks for all the great recipes, I really enjoy your blog! Good luck in Missouri!

Super easy to make!! I let my girls help me…then they devoured them 🙂 I’m going to make them for my children to give their friends during the Easter season. I bought some really cute candy bags from Box and Wrap…the one I chose has bunnies on the bag. I believe half of the gift is in the packaging.

Great idea to use as a gift! They hold up so well so that would work perfectly!
