I picked up a package of these The Better Chip Jalapeno flavored corn chips at the commissary a couple months ago. I fell in love- they are awesome! Little chunks of real jalapeno lace the crisp and thick corn chip. So I was super excited to receive a sampler assortment in the mail to review.
They have the four flavors pictured- sweet onion, fresh corn, jalapeno and red pepper. The are made from natural ingredients like corn masa, veggies, sea salt. They are gluten free, cholesterol free and free of preservatives. Not to mention they are the best flavored corn chip out there (in my opinion). I opened them all up for a taste test and everyone in the family loved them. They have 2 grams of fiber per serving and are made with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. Even the right chips can fit into a healthy diet on occasion.
The jalapeno flavored chips, which were my favorite flavor, inspired me to make a batch of cilantro-jalapeno hummus to go along with our snacking, one of my favorite flavor combos of hummus. We are constantly going through tub after tub of hummus around here and no one seems to grow tired of it. If I buy it from the store, I go with Sabra brand, but making it at home is so easy.
I don’t usually follow a recipe, but rather add the ingredients until it it taste right. You can’t really mess it up too bad either- if you add a little more or less of anything it will turn out just fine. Except salt. I always under-salt and add more if needed.
Classic hummus is hard to beat, but it’s always fun to change up the flavors too. I read a little trick that if you want to achieve a smoother hummus, pop off the skin of the cooked garbanzo beans before pureeing. You just rub a bean between your index and thumb and off the peel goes. It isn’t a necessary step to making homemade hummus, but I have to agree it makes it smoother and creamier. And it’s shockingly addicting popping those skins off!
If you love hummus, you’ve got to try this one….and soon I will show you my new addiction that involves this hummus. Stay tuned!
- 1 can low sodium garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained, skins removed
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 Tablespoons tahini
- 3 Tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 4 Tablespoon water
- ½ cup packed cilantro leaves, chopped
- ½ fresh jalapeno, minced
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon cumin
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
- Add all ingredients in a mini food processor and blend until smooth and creamy.
- If doubling the recipe, use full sized food processor. Blend beans through cumin until well combined, but still chunky. Stream in olive oil and continue to blend until smooth. Serve with veggies, chips or crackers.

I always pin your recipes I like…but the pin could not find any images on this recipe. Do you know why it did not pick up the photos of the hummus?
Melanie Flinn, MS, RD says
Hi Kimberly,
I just tried pinning the hummus recipe (using the pin button on my blog) and it worked for me. Maybe refresh your browser or try again later? Usually those things seem to resolve themselves. Thanks for pinning! 🙂 Melanie
Brittany Smith says
Mine won’t pin, either! But that won’t stop me from making it! I made one during Super Bowl just like this…but I think yours will be better. I was sort of winging it for that one.
Melanie Flinn, MS, RD says
So weird. Well I just pinned it to my pinterest page just to make sure it worked which it did. Feel free to re-pin if you want. I remember you saying that happened once before Brittany and then you did it again and it worked? I am all out of ideas why it wouldn’t be showing up. 🙁
Brittany Smith says
Yep…it did work the second time. And it just now worked again for me. So weird! But the good news is that I pinned it! So hopefully more people will see the love! I really want some NOW.

I am making that hummus soon. Our love affair with jalapeños and hummus began with your sandwich. My mouth is watering. I would make it now but I have no fresh jalapeños– drats.

All my favorite foods!! I can’t wait to make it.

We made the hummus tonight, we loved it. Going to try it on baked potatoes tomorrow with homemade salsa.
Melanie Flinn, MS, RD says
Glad you liked it Gretchen! I’ve never tried mixing hummus with potatoes, but I love it with everything else so why not? Have a great Sunday and thanks for the feedback. 😉

Hi, I am so happy I found your blog! I am going to try making this and I have everything except the tahini. Is this necessary? Is there anything to replace it? Thank you for sharing with us!
Melanie says
Hi Jennifer, I am glad you found it too! Thank you! Unfortunately tahini is a traditional ingredient in hummus so to me it’s a must. It’s what gives hummus that “hummus” flavor. With that being said, beans are cheap and if you just want to try it as a bean spread, it might be worth the experiment. Otherwise most grocery stores carry tahini, although you might have to ask which aisle as it’s never too predictable. 😉 Hope you visit again!

Hi again! I took your advice and bought some! This was so delicious! I couldn’t stop eating it. I don’t like most humus flavors from the store and I have tried a lot but this is just amazing. I love spicy and cilantro and this was meant for my recipe collection! =) Thank you for sharing!
Melanie says
Aww, yay! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! You will definitely put that tahini to good use and it lasts quite a long time in the fridge which is nice. Enjoy!
