Today I have some healthy breakfast ideas for you. I have always been a big breakfast eater, but lately (I think because I am not exercising quite as much as normal) I am just not very hungry in the morning. If I skip though, I turn into a short-tempered, irritable mama. No bueno.
I recently had the chance to try out siggi’s yogurt, a unique Icelandic-style strained yogurt. We are big yogurt eaters in this house so I am always open to trying healthy yogurt brands. Have you guys tried it? Only one of our local stores carries it so hopefully you can find it near you too.
Siggi’s skyr (the traditional yogurt of Iceland), is made with simple ingredients and not a lot of sugar, it’s also free of any artificial preservatives, thickeners, sweeteners, flavors, corn syrup or colors. Plus it’s made with milk from grass-fed cows.
What is skyr? (according to siggi’s website)
“It is made by incubating skim milk with live active cultures. The whey, the water naturally found in milk, is then strained away to make for a much thicker, creamier, concentrated yogurt. So to make just one cup of skyr, with all that water going out, you need 3 – 4 times the amount of milk required to make a regular cup of yogurt. As a result of this process skyr comes out with 2-3 times the protein count of standard yogurt.”
My thoughts- I loved it. It was super duper creamy and thicker than regular yogurt- almost like pudding. Probably one of the top two brands for creamy texture in my opinion.
Siggi’s yogurt is a great start to a healthy breakfast because it’s high in protein, ~14 grams per 5 ounce container, high in calcium and only has 110 calories. It’s also high in live cultures which are great for digestive health.
The sugar content comes in at 11 grams which includes the naturally-occuring sugar found in yogurt, lactose, and the added cane sugar. I found this yogurt to taste more tart than sweet which is a good thing.
Here are some healthy breakfast ideas for incorporating a high protein yogurt like siggi’s into your breakfast:
- Add to smoothies
- Make a yogurt bowl- yogurt, top with fruit, granola, nuts and/or seeds
- Bake with it- you can use yogurt in muffins, breads and pancakes
- Top your pancakes with yogurt instead of syrup
- Make a parfait- layer yogurt with fruit and cereal or granola of choice
- Put a dollop in your oatmeal
- Make frozen banana pops- bananas dipped in yogurt and cereal, then stored in the freezer
- Smear it on toast and top with sliced fruit
- Mix it with natural peanut butter and a drizzle of honey
- Make frozen yogurt bites- mix yogurt granola and fruit (added sweetener like honey or agave if desired) and pour mixture into ice cube trays, freeze and enjoy
- Make a breakfast banana split- banana, yogurt, fruit
- Use it as a dip for apple slices
- Eat plain- grab a spoon and go
And we are just talking about breakfast today, but there are so many savory ways to enjoy yogurt- from dips to sauces to marinades.
